“I continue to be grateful for the opportunity to work alongside so many Red Crossers! Thanks for all you are doing to support the alumni network, and I am honored to have the opportunity to share my Red Cross story.”

April D. Wood: A Lifelong Journey of Service, Shaped by the Red Cross

This summer marks April Wood's fourth anniversary as President & CEO of National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD), a coalition of organizations dedicated to mitigating and alleviating the impact of disasters across the United States. But for those of us in the Red Cross Alumni Network, April's story resonates on a deeper level. Her journey, interwoven with threads of Red Cross experiences, speaks to the enduring power of volunteerism and the profound impact it can have on a life's trajectory.

Before leading National VOAD, April served in various roles in Disaster Operations at American Red Cross National Headquarters, most recently as Senior Director of External Program Services leading the development of the Disaster Partner Hub, a GIS platform for multi-agency data sharing. Her extensive experience in disaster response was evident in VOAD's recent efforts following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, devastating storms that ravaged the Florida coast with far reaching inland impacts. National VOAD members, under April's leadership, mobilized to provide vital relief – coordinating emergency supplies, logistical support and deploying volunteers with specialized skills, including health professionals and bridge building teams. They continue to be involved in the long-term recovery process, providing case management and resources to help communities rebuild while also responding to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

Reading about this work – coalition building, case management, disaster response, short-term and long-term recovery – likely stirs familiar feelings for many of you. Whether your Red Cross experience was in Biomedical Services, Disaster Services, Service to the Armed Forces, International Services, or Health and Safety Training, these themes resonate with our shared past and the dedication to service that unites us. April's story is a testament to the enduring impact of the Red Cross on those who have been touched by its mission.

Expanding the VOAD Movement: Global Collaboration

April's commitment to disaster preparedness and response extends beyond national borders. Just recently, she traveled to Taiwan to discuss the growing importance of global cooperation in disaster response and the shared commitment to helping communities prepare for and recover from crises, no matter where they occur (see photo). She met with the Chief Secretary of the Taiwan Ministry of the Interior and leaders from the National Fire Agency. "It was such an honor to share the VOAD movement and it’s due to all the volunteers who serve communities impacted by disasters around the world!”

A Spark Ignited: The Power of Volunteerism

April's journey into the world of humanitarian aid began with a personal crisis. In high school, one of her closest friends was involved in a serious ATV accident, requiring more than 100 units of blood to survive. Driven by a desire to help, April helped organize her first Red Cross blood drive, an experience that would forever alter the course of her life. "Volunteering is one thing," she reflects, "but volunteering to save a life is a whole different meaningful experience."

This life-changing event had a ripple effect. Inspired by his own recovery, her friend, Eddy Burris II, encouraged April to become a first responder. She pursued EMT training, attended nursing school, worked at a trauma center and eventually became a Disaster Health Services Nurse with her local Red Cross chapter. Over the years, she provided health assessments, treatment and support at numerous local and national emergencies.

The Red Cross Thread: Mentorship and Meaningful Connections

While studying at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, April encountered another pivotal figure – Diana Waley, a Red Cross nurse who encouraged her to connect with the organization. "She was an incredible nurse from East Tennessee," April recalls. "She encouraged me to apply to volunteer with the Knoxville Red Cross in 2001." This marked the beginning of April's formal career with the Red Cross, a career built on a foundation of volunteerism and a passion for helping others.

Later, while volunteering as a nurse with the Atlanta Red Cross, April met Jeanne Spears, another influential mentor who further shaped her understanding of humanitarian work. Reflecting on her time with the Red Cross, April shares, "It was the best job in the world, and it significantly kickstarted my career. I worked with such a large group of talented colleagues. It was where I was first exposed to delivering a mission of alleviating suffering, helping people in their worst moments."

Paying it Forward: Inspiring the Next Generation

April's commitment to service extends beyond her professional roles. She remains actively involved in her community, volunteering with her local fire department in Maryland. During our interview, she even took a call to discuss a bike donation, highlighting her ongoing dedication to making a difference.

Driven by a deep belief in the power of volunteerism, April encourages everyone she meets to get involved. "A dedicated volunteer can change the world," she asserts. It's a philosophy she embodies, paying forward the kindness and support that shaped her own path.

April Wood's story is an inspiration to all of us in the Red Cross Alumni Network. It's a reminder of the profound impact we can have on the lives of others and the enduring legacy of service that connects us all. Does April's journey remind you of a friend or colleague?
