ATTN: ARCAN Family
We are excited about our first ARCAN in-person gathering, which will be in Philadelphia on September 25-27 and held in partnership with the American Red Cross Overseas Association (ARCOA) and a group of former and current Red Cross disaster services staff and volunteers.
This “3Union” will bring together a range of former and current Red Crossers to meet in person to reconnect and reminisce, share stories and strengthen the bonds that have always made this network so special. While we all worked in different parts of the organization, our Red Cross experience unites us.
Our members tell us that one of the reasons they are part of ARCAN is to reconnect and this event is a great opportunity to do that in person!
Each group has its own agenda and meeting times in Philadelphia; we will collaborate on events that bring Red Crossers together across lines of service.
This gathering is open to both current and former American Red Cross employees and volunteers —we hope to create an event that reflects the full breadth of our shared experience. I believe it may be the start of more partnerships and collaborations among Red Cross alumni groups.
The main hotel will be the Wyndham in the historic district of Philadelphia, and ARCAN members also have the option of booking at other hotels in the area.
We are exploring local museums, wineries and the Philadelphia Phillies have home games Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. ARCAN also will be able to join ARCOA events such as a Saturday dinner where they will honor people who served with Service to the Armed Forces.
Look for more information on activities at the 3Union and how to register in the days and weeks ahead.
Red Cross Pension Management Changes
Another matter of interest to a number of ARCAN members is the change occurring to the administration of the Red Cross pension. The bottom line is that your pension amount should not change; what will be different is the insurer issuing the pension payments.
People still in the pension system should have received a letter in the mail from Red Cross NHQ earlier this month about this. Please know that ARCAN continues to be in close contact with the Red Cross about this matter; we have an article on the change in this newsletter and will be sharing updates on the ARCAN website.
Remembering ARCAN with a Bequest
I also want to recognize the support for ARCAN from retirees such as Maurice Levite, who is featured in this newsletter. Maurice has left a bequest in his will to ARCAN because he believes in the importance of an organization that supports former Red Cross staff and volunteers. A few months ago, ARCAN also received a donation from the estate of long-time Red Crosser Dave Denton.
These kinds of financial support for ARCAN through a gift in a will or estate are greatly appreciated.
Best,
Becky
